夢、詩｜dREAMS, pOEMS

你不是我，我不是你，
這不是在劃清介界線，
只是我們本身就是獨一無二。
yOU are not mE, i am not yOU,
this is nOT setting bOUNDARIES between us,
jUST we are uNIQUE in ourselves.

胡適－《夢與詩》（一九二零年）：

都是平常經驗，
都是平常影象，
偶然湧到夢中來，
變幻出多少新奇花樣！
All are oRDINARY eXPERIENCES,
All are oRDINARY iMAGES,
They just got into my dREAMS by cHANCE,
Then turned into number of nEW and fANTASTIC vISIONS!

都是平常情感，
都是平常言語，
偶然碰著個詩人，
變幻出多少新奇詩句！
All are oRDINARY eMOTIONS,
All are oRDINARY wORDS,
They just met a pOET by cHANCE,
Then turned into number of nEW and fANTASTIC pOEMS!

醉過才知酒濃，
愛過才知情重；——
你不能做我的詩，
正如我不能做你的夢。
Only after being dRUNK, one knows the sTRENGTH of the aLCOHOL.
Only after having lOVED, one knows the wEIGHT of lOVE; ––
You cANNOT wRITE my poems,
Just like I cANNOT dREAM your dreams.

nOTES:
*₁: Hu Shih (1891-1962), was born in the Qing Dynasty (1636-1912) and died in the Taiwan (ROC). He was philosopher, writer, scholar, diplomat and reformer. He had a wide range of interests and conducted in-depth researches in literature, philosophy, history, textual studies, education, ethics, and redology, and so on. He also was one of the most controversial scholars as he was the first scholar to advocate using written vernacular and overthrow the more-than-2000-year-old classical Chinese. He became one of the leaders of the new cultural movement (1910s-1920s) by promoting literary reform. He used to serve as the ambassador of the Taiwan (ROC) in the United States (1938–1942) and was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature (1939).
